The Arts Take Center Stage : Colorado Historic Opera Houses Circuit

When most people think of Colorado, outdoor adventure is often first to come to mind. But, did you know the state is also home to an impressive lineup of opera houses?

The Colorado Historic Opera Houses Circuit connects five opera houses in five picturesque mountain towns, taking travelers through Aspen, Ouray, Leadville, Telluride and Central City. Art enthusiasts will enjoy the world-class performances, but really anyone can benefit from après skiing with the arts this winter season.

“Colorado is incredibly lucky to offer robust arts and cultural programming throughout the year at our historic opera houses,” shares Eliza Voss, vice president of destination marketing at Aspen Chamber Resort Association.

These venues add a cultural dimension to ski trips in Aspen and Telluride or alongside a relaxing soak in Ouray’s hot springs. The opera houses also complement a weekend exploring historic Central City or Leadville. With a variety of events across the Western Slope — from classic operas to contemporary performances — Colorado’s winter opera circuit promises a rich cultural experience against the backdrop of snow-capped peaks.

“Colorado’s rich history is truly one of the defining features that makes our community so special. The opera houses in this circuit are not to be missed. You can feel the history in these spaces, which is part of the reason why they attract such incredible programming year after year,” says Adam Ducharme, tourism director of Visit Leadville-Twin Lakes.

All of the opera houses are on the National Register of Historic Places and were built from 1878 to 1913. The Colorado Tourism Office recommends at least seven days to drive the full circuit and explore the towns.

“The circuit provides an opportunity to travel back in time in these relics of the mining history of Colorado while experiencing worldclass music and entertainment of today,” explains Maggie Stevens, PR and marketing director of Sheridan Opera House.

Erin Osovets, associate marketing director of Central City Opera, believes the historic opera house stands as a testament to the spirit of the gold and silver miners of 1878. “It’s not just a venue, but a living monument to the passions and dreams of a bygone era,” she adds. “Visiting it is like stepping into a rich tapestry of music, history and the indomitable human spirit.”
