Voices of Western Colorado: Heritage
HERITAGE
Heritage is the thread that connects us to the past — the traditions, stories and crafts that shape who we are today. It’s the textures, flavors and rituals. We carry forward, honoring the people, places and practices that made us.
We Asked These Western Slope Locals to Weigh in on This Topic
COURTNEY KIEL
Owner of The Blue Beryl Winery
“I’m a firm believer that memories hold weight where they take place, and the Western Slope has a rich history of not only struggle, but passion as well. As a fourth-generation local, it’s been a beautiful experience to see how others continue our heritage through entrepreneurship and storytelling. Here at The Blue Beryl Winery, our location sits at the base of the Gearhart Mine, where my great-greatgreat- grandfather worked. Our branding honors the hard work of my ancestors, who helped build the Western Slope into what it is today. It’s an honor to share these stories with passersby as they experience the fruits of our generational labor and passion.”
ANNA “ACE” HARTSOCK
General Manager of The High Lonesome Ranch
“To me, heritage is the thread that connects us to the original stewards of this rugged landscape. Following the Pine Gulch Fire, it became clear that true heritage is found in the humility to return to Indigenous ranching methods — practices that prioritize the health of the earth above all else. It is the quiet work of restoration and the pride of nourishing our neighbors with grass-finished beef. Heritage means healing the land by listening to its history and leaving behind a legacy of resilience that honors the wisdom of the past.”
ZACH GILLIAM
Eagle River Jamboree Event Organizer
“Heritage is the cultural roots of the generations before us who left a lasting legacy — one that continues to live through traditions, values, music, stories and community. It reminds us that we are part of something bigger than ourselves. Every day, through our actions, we contribute to the heritage we leave behind for future generations. The question is: what are we building for our communities that will have a lasting impact? Whether through art, service, leadership or connection, I believe heritage is created when we invest in people, strengthen community, inspire others and leave the world better than we found it.”
