Montrose Mudder Returns Early May To Kick Off Summer: More Mud, Music + A First-Ever Drone Show
As spring turns to summer in Western Colorado, one event invites the community to really dive headfirst into the season. Taking place May 8–9, 2026, the Montrose Mudder returns for its fifth year. It has become a signature kickoff to warmer days, blending outdoor adventure, community connection and just the right amount of chaos.
Originally launched through a partnership between the City of Montrose and the Montrose Rotary Interact Club, the event was designed to bring a new kind of active, community-centered experience to the area. “It started as a partnership to add a sports event to Montrose,” says Thomas Ceniceros, pavilion and community events coordinator. “And to bring more people around Montrose to participate — so they can see what it’s all about.”
At its core, the Mudder is a muddy, obstacle-filled 5K course that begins and ends at the Montrose Rotary Amphitheater. Participants can expect a full-immersion experience. “You can expect to have mud from your socks to your head, basically,” Ceniceros says.
Obstacles shift each year, keeping the course fresh and increasingly challenging, while maintaining a playful, all-abilities atmosphere.
Beyond the race itself, the event has evolved into a full weekend celebration. This year introduces a two-day format, beginning with a Friday night kickoff concert complete with live music, food trucks, a beer garden and on-site registration. Headlining the evening is Disco Fuego, alongside local band Chuck J, setting the tone for a high-energy start to the weekend.
“This really feels like a kickoff to summer,” says Kathryn Riley, pavilion and community events manager. “It’s a way for the community to get out there — even if you’re not participating, it’s a really fun event to watch.”
New this year, and expected to draw significant attention, is a large-scale drone show following Friday’s concert. Created in partnership with a state-supported program celebrating Colorado’s 150th anniversary, the show marks a first for Montrose. “Montrose has never had anything like this before,” Riley says.
Families are also a key part of the Mudder experience. A kids course, organized with local partners Maslow Academy and Bright Beginnings, offers a scaled-down version of the fun, ensuring younger participants can get in on the action.
While early registration offers discounted pricing, participants can also sign up the day of the race, making it easy to join in on a whim. Whether running, cheering or simply soaking in the atmosphere, the Montrose Mudder delivers a uniquely local experience.
“There’s nothing like this event here in Montrose,” Ceniceros says. And that may be exactly the point — a little mud, a lot of laughter and a community ready to welcome summer together.
