Winter Racing, Elevated: Vail Rec Continues to Grow This Seasonal Series

If you hear “winter” and think “uphill,” this race series is for you. Join the Vail Recreation District for the upcoming season of winter racing to get you out and up. The 2024 Bloch & Chapleau Winter Races are back with five exciting events around Eagle County. 

“We are so excited to be kicking off the 2024 Bloch & Chapleau Winter Races with the new Beaver Creek Uphill & Skimo on January 6, 2024, ” says Beth Pappas, sports event and partnership director. “Our Arrowhead uphill & skimo event has really grown in popularity since we started it five years ago, and bringing a similar race over to Beaver Creek Mountain is a great chance to expand on the success we’ve had so far with this sport.”

Saturday, January 6, 2024 at 7 a.m.


To kick off the season, this new skimo and uphill event will be at Beaver Creek. Choose between the uphill (only the ascent is timed) or skimo (both the ascent and descent are timed). Racers may use any means to get up the mountain (snowshoes, skis, splitboards or winter running devices). Skis or a snowboard are required to compete in the skimo competition, as are metal edges and helmets. 

The uphill route will take participants up Centennial; participants will ascend approximately 2,100 vertical feet from the base of Centennial Lift to Spruce Saddle Lodge. The downhill route takes participants on Gold Dust (course subject to change based on grooming and snow conditions). 

This event will conclude with breakfast and awards at Powder 8 Kitchen & Tap at the base of Beaver Creek.
